Genetic Testing Bill Passes

Washington — By a vote of 414 to 1, the House has passed a bill that will bar health insurers from using genetic information about a person’s predisposition toward disease in coverage decisions.

As written, the bill would prohibit insurers from using genetic information to set premiums or determine enrollment eligibility.

The Senate had previously passed companion legislation by a margin of 95 to 0. President Bush is expected to sign a reconciled version of the bills into law.
