Board Elections

WIAA Installs 2008-2009 Officers and Directors



Rancho Cordova, Calif. — The Western Insurance Agents Association (WIAA), one of the oldest agent/broker associations in the Western region, announced the confirmation of its board members and officers for the 2008-2009 term. The board officers were officially installed at the group’s annual member meeting.

The 2008-2009 Board Officers include:

Chairman
Kathy McDonald, CPIW, leads the board after having held numerous officer and director positions. McDonald recently joined the Watkin Insurance Group LLC in Henderson, Nev., and brings to them her more than 25 years of experience in all lines of insurance. 

Chairman-Elect
Phil Hakopian is the president/owner of Cornerstone Commercial and Personal Insurance Services of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. Over his 20-year insurance career, Hakopian has cultivated many successful client relationships as well as with vendors and other insurance professionals. According to WIAA Bylaws, he will automatically take the Chairman position next term.

Vice Chairman
Industry veteran, Neal Stanley, is EVP of United Valley Insurance Services Inc., an independent agency cluster headquartered in Fresno, Calif. With more than 30 years of experience in the management and development of insurance companies and insurance agencies, Stanley has held executive positions at a number of organizations as well as continuing as an attorney admitted to practice California.   

Secretary/Treasurer
Carol Connors began her career in the surplus lines field and hasn’t changed her course. As the owner and founder of Ck Specialty Insurance Association Inc., Carol has successfully grown the Morgan Hill, Calif.-based agency from one office to five offices in California, Oregon and Nevada. 

Michael Golden of Imhoff Sunland Insurance in Fresno, Calif. is immediate past chairman.

WIAA offers membership to agents and brokers in California, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico, and continues to serve the needs of insurance professionals.

New York Life CEO Elected Northeastern Chair



New York — The Corporation of Northeastern University, a leader in experiential education and translational research, elected Sy Sternberg, M.S. ’68, as chairman. Sternberg is chairman of the board and CEO of New York Life Insurance Co.

Sternberg joined the Board of Trustees in 2004, and will succeed Neal Finnegan as chairman on July 1st. Finnegan, who becomes chairman emeritus, has served as chairman since 1998 and has served on the board of trustees since 1989.

Sternberg, who graduated from Northeastern with a master’s degree in electrical engineering, is one of the nation’s most prominent business leaders. His leadership acumen, deep understanding of the global arena and personal commitment to Northeastern will provide a vast resource of knowledge and experience to the board and the administrative leadership of Northeastern.

“Northeastern is enjoying tremendous momentum," says Joseph Aoun, president of Northeastern University. “Each day brings with it excitement of what it is new. Sy Sternberg understands the impact of everything we do and appreciates our quest for future greatness. Few leaders share Sy’s high caliber of vision and integrity, not to mention his absolute commitment to our university. Sternberg joined New York Life in 1989 as SVP in charge of the company’s group insurance department. In February 1995, he was elected vice chairman of the board of New York Life, and became president and COO on October 1, 1995. He became chairman of the board and CEO on April 1, 1997.

PERI Seeking Nominations for Board of Directors



Fairfax, Va. — The Public Entity Risk Institute (PERI), a nonprofit research institute focused on risk management training and education, is accepting nominations to fill two positions on the board of directors.  Board members and former Chairs Yvonne Norton Leung and Gary Binger will step down from the board in December 2008.

PERI's board of directors is comprised of five members. PERI's charter directs that three members of the board represent the interests of the public sector. The remaining two director positions are filled with a representative of nonprofit organizations and one representing small business interests. The positions to be filled are for a nonprofit representative and a public sector representative.

The deadline for submitting nominations to the board nominating committee is August 1, 2008. Elections will be held on September 25 during the quarterly board meeting to be held in Richmond, Va. Kasich, Krol and Wilcox Join Norvax Board



Chicago — Norvax Inc., Chicago, an online health insurance technology company, added three executives to its board of directors: Randy Wilcox, founder of Sarcom Inc., a technology services and solutions company; John Krol, retired chairman and CEO of DuPont; and John Kasich, a former Ohio Congressman, corporate board member and regular Fox News contributor.

Brodsky Joins Lloyd's Board of Association



Chicago — Lee Brodsky, president of JMB Insurance, Mortgage Banking Insurance Group, was invited to join the board of directors of the association of Lloyd’s Brokers, which offers information, education and business contacts to stakeholders in Illinois and the Illinois insurance community.

Brodsky has more than 30 years of insurance experience as a broker and underwriting manager, and has spent more than 20 years as a CEO. He has focused on developing and underwriting insurance programs for banks, thrifts and mortgage bankers and brokers for fidelity, errors & omissions, directors & officers liability, professional liability, employment practices liability and surety bonds.

Before joining JMB Insurance, Brodsky was with Aon as managing director for national accounts and association relationships for financial and professional risk solutions, and he served as president and CEO of Bankers Insurance Service and Scarborough Co.
