Aetna has announced the layoff of 160 people in its Innovation, Technology and Service Operations (ITSO). The layoffs will be staggered over the remainder of the year and into 2013, said Cynthia Michener, Aetna spokesperson.
“These actions have primarily affected managers,” Michener said, adding that Aetna is providing support services and salary continuation, including outplacement and employee assistance program services.
The company said the redesign, announced in August, is intended to allow it serve customers more effectively and efficiently and bring expenses in line with competitors.
“Aetna has been working to bring our expenses in line with our competitors and get ready for the world of insurance exchanges in 2014, and we have to make these changes to more effectively compete in a marketplace that is increasingly focused on affordability,” Michener said.
