MassMutual Elects Spitz to Board of Directors

Springfield, Mass. — Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. (MassMutual) elected William Spitz to the company's Board of Directors. Spitz, a consultant, was previously the vice chancellor of Investments for Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. His appointment, unanimously approved by MassMutual's Board of Directors, is effective December 1, 2007.

Spitz joined Vanderbilt in 1985, where during his tenure he was responsible for management of the university's endowment fund, which has grown from $300 million to over $3.3 billion. In addition, he was responsible for the university's technology transfer and business incubation activity, banking relations, university real estate transactions and debt management. 

Prior to his appointment at Vanderbilt, Spitz served as president of NSR Asset Management Corp., and as a member of the executive committee of NSR's parent firm.  Before that, he was VP, director of research and a portfolio manager at Wertheim Asset Management Corp. He began his investment career as a research officer at Citibank conducting quantitative research with responsibility for developing computer-based investment decision making tools.
