4 Insurers Make Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For List
USAA, American Fidelity Assurance and Aflac make the list again; one more insurer makes its debut.

FORTUNE magazine released its 2012 list of "100 Best Companies to Work For," which contained four insurers and a handful of vendors and consultants that play in the insurance space.
The top-rated carrier on this year's list is USAA, which provides a full range of financial services to member of the U.S. military and their families. The insurer, ranked at number 20 (down from 17 last year) has a 7-percent job growth and 23,211 U.S. employees. Fortune points to the insurers large headquarters—with a medical clinic, an indoor walking path, and tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts—as one reason it made the list.

The insurer next on the list at 47 is American Fidelity Assurance. The insurer, also falling on the list from 39 has 0-percent job growth and 1,490 U.S. employees. Fortune says 18 percent of the insurer’s employees have been with the company more than 20 years, and all employees get an annual holiday bonus or incentive package, plus a defined-benefit pension plan.
New to the list this year is Allianz at number 51. The German-owned insurer has 1,711 U.S. employees and a 2-percent job growth. Allianz uses the month of September to develop and celebrate employees, ending with an awards ceremony held in a tent the size of a football field set up in the parking lot, Fortune says.
Making the list for the 14th straight year is Aflac. The insurer—with a -4-percent job growth and 4,242 U.S. employees—fell from 57 in 2011 to 77 in 2012. Fortune points to the action employees take in negative times. “When the earthquake and tsunami struck in Japan, U.S. employees raised $100,000 to send to their kazoku (extended family) there,” Fortune says.
