Aviva Admits Data Breach

Insurance Networking News, June 4, 2009

By Bill Kenealy

Des Moines, Iowa-based life insurer Aviva USA has acknowledged a security breach that may have exposed 550 of its customers to identity theft.

In a mandatory letter to the Office of the New Hampshire Attorney General, Aviva admitted “our company recently suffered an unauthorized disclosure of personal information due to the operation of malicious software (commonly known as malware) on one of our computers. The information that may have been disclosed included customer Social Security Numbers and names and/or addresses.”

Customers potentially impacted by the breach will receive a letter and be offered free identity theft protection service for a period of 12 months, along with identify theft insurance coverage of $25,000.
