Florida Home to Most Tornadoes

Boston — CDS Business Mapping LLC, a provider of online hazard mapping, yesterday announced its most recent list of the top 10 tornado prone metro-areas. The list is based on the RiskMeter Online Tornado Model, which predicts the severity of tornadoes for any location in the continental United States.

RiskMeter utilizes Internet mapping technology to determine the proximity to natural hazards for any property in the Unites States, and is used by underwriters and agents to automate property lookups, including distance to coast, windpool eligibility, rating territories (company specific), proximity to brush, earthquake information, flood zones and others.

According to a report released by RiskMeter Online, the following are the top 10 tornado prone metro-areas:

1.)    Denver, Colo.*
2.)    Houston, Texas
3.)    Miami, Fla.
4.)    Hollywood, Fla.
5.)    Tampa, Fla.
6.)    Lincoln, Ill.
7.)    Lakeland, Fla.
8.)    Little Rock, Ark.
9.)    Cape Coral, Fla.
10.) Oklahoma City, Ok.

*Not downtown, but a rural area to the northeast.

According to the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, in an average year, the United States experiences 1,200 tornadoes, killing 55 Americans, injuring 1,500 and causing more than $400 million in damage.
