Janice Abraham, United Educators Insurance president and CEO, was presented The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation’s 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award during a ceremony on October 30. The award, which was presented by Barbara Baurer, EVP and COO of COUNTRY Financial, recognizes industry leaders for their commitment to education, and for their support of the missions of The Griffith Foundation and the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI).
Abraham is responsible for developing and executing the organization’s business strategy and operational plans. During Abraham’s tenure, UE has become known as the premier risk management and liability insurance expert serving educational institutions, offering in depth expertise on the unique risks and claims facing education, according to The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation. UE serves more than 1,160 schools, colleges and universities as members.
Her background as an international banker for J.P. Morgan lead her to various senior positions at Cornell University and ultimately as CFO/treasurer at Whitman College-both customers of her current employer, United Educators Insurance. As a result, Abraham, now UE's president and CEO, applies those rules to the mechanics of this privately held insurer's business, developing successful risk management programs and creating a business model that lends itself to a robust investment performance, strong capital position, and, thanks to established premiums unaffected by market swings, stable profit levels.
Abraham was appointed the first woman to chair the board of governors of PCI from 2009-2010 and was named one of INN’s 2011 Women in Insurance Leadership winners. She currently serves on the association’s Executive and Investment Committees. Abraham also serves on the board of directors of United Educators. Additionally, she serves as a trustee of Whitman College and on the Whitman College Investment Committee, The Griffith Foundation Leadership Council, The Institutes’ Board of Trustees, American University’s School of International Service Dean’s Advisory Council, and the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges’ Editorial Board. She is a former president of the Western Association of College and University Business Officers (WACUBO) and a past member of the board of directors of NACUBO and the National Risk Retention Association.
