Aetna, Allstate Lead Insurers in Civic Engagement Rankings

Bloomberg’s list of the top 50 civically active companies included four insurers overall.

Of the four insurers included in Bloomberg’s Civic 50 list, which attempts to identify “the companies that best use their time, talent and resources to improve the quality of life in their local communities and beyond,” Aetna and Allstate lead the way.

Aetna was the leading insurer, coming in at fourth. IBM was ranked first overall, followed by Citigroup, AT&T, Aetna and Capital One Financial Corp.

Allstate ranked thirteenth, just ahead of Microsoft and behind FedEx. UnitedHealth Group ranked eighteenth and Ameriprise Financial was listed at 43.

To create the Civic 50, Bloomberg worked with the National Conference on Citizenship and Points of Light to design a survey measuring corporate civic engagement programs focusing on seven factors: Measurement/strategy—program structure and the metrics used to evaluate its success; leadership—involvement of the highest levels of a corporation; design—participation of corporate departments in program activities and direction; community partnerships—working with partners, such as nonprofits and other companies; employee civic growth—contributions to the personal growth and engagement of employees; cause alignment—alignment of causes with core competencies and workforce skills; and transparency—how well a program communicates its work to the public and shares best practices.
