Re-entry into the Workforce—What's the Secret?

Re-entry into the Workforce—What's the Secret?

Postby carrie.burns » Wed Apr 21, 2010 3:25 pm

According to a recent Bloomberg article, re-entry into the workforce after time out for various reasons—including to care for young children or parents—is proving difficult for some women. Recent data from the Center for Work-Life Policy (to be published in the June issue of Harvard Business Review) found that 89% of women who took "off-ramps" want to return to work. However, 60% of them don't succeed.

Did you succeed? Any advice?

60% didn't succeed? That's an alarming number. I wonder what the common denominator is among these women. Did they all have similar level experience before they quit? Are they in a wide variety of fields? I'm going to more research on this.

I'd like to talk about specific INSURANCE types of re-entry. I have two women who've re-entered the workplace that I assist on a day to day basis in their insurance career. While personalities are important, dedication and organization are critical to success. People understand it when your kid has a fever or your husband's making unreasonable demands. We all have drama. The issue is does that drama get in the way on an ongoing and destructive basis. I've pitched in and went to appointments that had life conflicts. We're a team. We all need one another.
While the above example is real and is real life, I can see employers who aren't sensitive to the life of their employee (maile or female)...which is a shame. Creating a nurturing environment extends to the customers we have. They know how we treat our own people because we treat our customers with the same dignity and propriety....which helps us retain and gain new clients.

Coming back to work after time out for different reasons can be very difficult and challenging, especially for women. You have to re-establish a work routine, refresh your skills and rebuild your confidence.
