INN blogger, Joe McKendrick, recently asked the question “The Client Side: Are Mobile Devices Capable of Heavy Lifting?” He says netbooks and smartphones can do a lot, but “in content-rich environments such as insurance operations, it doesn't seem feasible that full-screen PCs and laptops will go away anytime soon.”

What do you think? Will netbooks, smartphones, etc. replace PCs and laptops in the future? If so, how far down the road?

I believe that tablets could eventually replace PCs if they continue to evolve. What tablets offer today, no way do they replace the PC, but rather replace a lot of the usage time that PCs used to receive.

For mobile devices, it's not conducive to program, develop, or create like you can on a PC. However, it is the popular choice for browsing, socializing, and checking email. Cutting-edge mobile devices provide ease-of-use features that PCs simply don't have. With that they don't replace the PC but offer features the PC never had.

For content-rich browsing or development and those that don't care for high-performance mobile phones or tablets, PCs will still have a place in our world, but as the tablet evolves and competes more with the features of a PC, I believe that, yes the clunky PC and even the now clunky laptop, will be a product of the past.

Today businesses are being forced to deal with consumer gadgets tied to the workplace. Mobile devices are no longer used as a means of communicating with people. Tablets and smartphones are now used for accessing office files, marketing, getting leads, etc.
